Support for Non-OSU / Partner-Owned Computers

 

 

Non-OSU/Partner-owned workstations meeting the following conditions are eligible for full support on the Forestry computing network. Fully supported non-OSU/Partner-owned workstations receive normal network access, assistance from Helpdesk in resolving computer problems, and access to all software that is not license-restricted to "university owned" computers.

  1. The workstation owner must obtain permission from their department head (or unit leader if not in a department or partner project leader).

  2. It is expected that the workstation will be supported on the network for a significant amount of time, at least three months.

  3. All networked machines on the Forestry network incur a support charge. The support charge is currently $42/machine/month but some hardware/systems or user requirements may necessitate additional hourly support costs.  Any additional costs will be discussed with the user following initial evaluation of the system. 

  4. Non-OSU/Partner-owned workstations are not eligible for Dean/CoF support. A faculty member, unit leader, or partner project leader must be named as the party responsible for making sure that the usual networked machine charge is paid for this machine. Ideally the fee would be paid from some departmental or project account, but it is possible for fees to be paid using personal funds. If the responsible party is a partner project leader and fees are to be paid by the partner agency, the owner must obtain authorization in writing from: 

    PNW - Mary Sabatka (Administrative Officer) 
    FRESC - Scott Price (or the Research Manager for the Corvallis Research Group) 
    ODFW - Kelly Moore (Western Oregon Research Program Manager)

  5. The owner agrees that the machine will be configured and maintained according to the Forestry Computing Resources "network device and workstation standards." FCR prefers that the system uses the FCR machine build but this is not required in all cases. Among other things FCR support means that the computer must meet the minimum hardware standards; Helpdesk personnel must have administrative access to the machine; the machine must be maintained properly to avoid creating problems for other network users; and the owner is responsible for physical workstation security.

  6. Use of the machine, as for all machines connected to the Forestry computing network, must be in accordance with the OSU Acceptable Use Policy.
