Forestry Computing Resources (FCR) is not in a position to purchase and install every piece of software requested by its constituents, for example, applications which are highly specialized in nature, and wouldn't be used by the larger Forestry Community. This document is to establish the procedures FCR and projects will use to accommodate requests for specialized applications.
FCR and interested parties will first discuss the feasibility of installing a piece of specialized software on the network. Details like does it have network installation capabilities and disk space requirements will be discussed. Additional services required by the software (disk space for data, database hosting, etc) will be identified. Before the interested parties continue, they will have an outline of what additional charges will be incurred by installing this specialized application on the network. If the installation is feasible, then:
Interested parties will be responsible for the purchase of the software. They will also be responsible for drumming up any additional financial support from other groups within the Forestry Community. FCR may be able to provide names of other groups which might be interested in the software.
FCR will install the software on network servers.
Additional services required by the software (disk space for data, database hosting, etc) will be covered under extended services already established, and already discussed in the initial meeting.
The interested parties will be responsible for paying any yearly software maintenance fees for the software.
The software remains "unsupported" by the helpdesk, and the project is responsible for user support issues relating to the software. FCR will assist in setting up a mailing list of users, if requested.

On the webpage, http://helpdesk.forestry.oregonstate.edu/software-support, FCR will list all specialized applications and a contact person to keep the rest of the Forestry Community informed of additions to the network.
