Forestry Computing Helpdesk

Extended Service: Web and Database Hosting

Purpose

To host SQL-Server databases and web sites on Forestry Computing Resources (FCR) servers in cases where the databases or web sites utilize resources beyond those provided as part of the FCR basic services package.  (The SQL-Server Database and Web Hosting service does not cover Web page or database design or development, project consulting, or project-specific code generation.)  This service is for a minimum of one year and may be renewed annually. Charges are pro-rated to complete the fiscal year of service start and then, subsequent years, billed annually during the first quarter of each fiscal year.

About Database and Web Hosting Services

Database hosting fees are charged if projects require Microsoft SQL Server (rather than Access).  In general, PIs will find that they must use SQL server (rather than Access) if their database:

  • Requires a web interface

  • Has multiple users writing to the database

  • Exhibits performance problems in Microsoft Access

  • Requires access for non-Forestry users

The need for performance levels beyond Microsoft Access is hard to predict in advance. Users may need to try working with Access before performance can be judged

Groups are charged for each separate SQL-Server database or web site that falls into the extended service category.  Web sites are "separate" if they use different URLs.  Databases are "separate" if they use unique database names on the SQL server.

Services Provided

The SQL-Server Database and Web Hosting extended service fee covers development and backup of the following services:

  • Microsoft SQL server login

  • Web server login

  • Server reconfiguration for your specific project

  • Administration of project disk space on database and web servers

  • Data backup

  • Software upgrades and security patches

  • Assistance implementing/configuring existing web and database tools (i.e. scripts, templates, counters, queries, etc)

  • Implementing web site security and access restrictions

  • Performance Tuning and Troubleshooting

  • Maintain a development SQL server

Initial setup and configuration of these services takes a considerable amount of time and attention for each project. To compensate for this fact, a one-time setup fee is charged in addition to the pro-rated annual hosting fee in the fiscal year that services are initiated for a project.

Services Not Provided

The Database and Web Hosting service does not cover Web page or database design or development, project consulting, or project-specific code generation.  Addition of workgroup specific web and database servers, or addition of storage devices to existing FCR servers, is covered under separate FCR policies and guidelines, and may incur additional charges as described therein. We encourage projects requiring extensive new resources (servers, storage arrays, etc) to work with the Forestry Computing group to find ways to meet those needs.
