Concurrent Use of Multiple Public Lab Computers

Lab Availability

  • Computing labs in Peavy 236 and Richardson 203 are available upon request to users who would like to use multiple lab computers concurrently for processing.  The Peavy 240 lab may also be available during the summer.
  • Processes will not be run Monday - Friday 8am to 6pm or anytime the lab is reserved for a class or workshop during the Academic year. Following official open-lab hours, no processes will be run on an occupied computer.
  • Richardson 203 Computers: Overnight or extended runs will require the user to physically visit each computer no later than 7 am weekday mornings to log off and ensure there are no problems when the lab is open. Jobs will not be run if the user cannot guarantee they will be able to visit the computer before open lab times.
  • Generally, usage of computers is on a first come, first serve basis. However, there may be circumstances that require rescheduling. It is the users' responsibility to request usage (see below) for desired computers and time slots. If multiple users need the same resources they will negotiate time on the computer with other users.

Lab User Responsibilities

  • Because computer programs will only be run during closed lab times, the user is responsible for troubleshooting problems that arise and notifying Jerry if they encounter problems they cannot resolve.
  • Keycodes for the labs will be assigned by Jerry. Do not share this number with anyone else. Each person requesting after hours access is given a unique code.
  • Failure to conform to these conditions will result in termination of access to the computers

How to Request for Lab Usage

  • Requests for usage of multiple lab computers must be submitted to Jerry Mohr.
  • The user must submit a proposal (1 page maximum) outlining the project (what are you doing), a description of the program being run, resources requested, timeline, and responsible parties (department, major professor, student).
  • If you are not familiar with the capabilities of the labs, request a meeting with the Forestry Computing Resources Group early in the process to determine what resources are available and appropriate for the project (i.e. Unix; PC; multiple computers; linux cluster).
  • Requests for administrator rights on the computers will be considered on an individual basis.
